The report published by the Persian service of the Mehr News Agency said that Lake Hamun, which is located in the southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchistan, has almost completely dried up due to years of drought and neglect, climate change, and desertification, and this is causing serious problems in the region.
Iran’s Environmental Protection Organization has confirmed that the situation of the lake is getting worse but the EPO is making efforts to address the environmental crisis, the MNA report added.
Lake Hamun is primarily fed by the Helmand River, which has its source in the Hindu Kush Mountains of Afghanistan.
Afghanistan has constructed dams on the river, which has considerably reduced the amount of water pouring into the lake and aggravated the situation.
Lake Hamun is actually a number of shallow marshy lagoons. A wide variety of animals and birds had made the lake their home due to its unique ecosystem before it began drying up.
